Last November Deb Damone witnessed an abusive situation in one of the Suffolk Emergency Rooms.  A 21 year old woman who was suffering from mental health issues became very agitated after being detained for several hours.  As Damone sat nearby this family she observed the painful dynamics that were challenging the family unit. It was also very obvious to Damone that this was not the beginning of this woman’s recovery, but a continuation of the horrendous pain.

At one point one of the police officers found her ranting of wanting to leave funny and suggested to his partner to put her into restraints. , Damone, being in ear shot, approached the parents and told them that it was against the law to restrain without the provocation of their daughter being potentially harmful to herself or anyone else, and advise them of her rights in case restraints were a consideration.

Frustrated by the poor treatment and the already five hour wait this woman was experiencing, Damone  realized that something needed to be done so that others did not suffer the same fate.
